How to Photograph Dramatic Clouds at Sunset

The difference between a nice sunset and a dramatic sunset is all about the clouds.
Of course, the difference between a dramatic sunset and no sunset is all about the clouds too!
A clear sky at sunset might turn a shade of pale blue or pink, which is beautiful and calming, but with just the right amount of clouds the sky becomes alive with fire and drama as the day’s last rays reflect off the clouds making them red, orange, purple and pink.
Desolation Sound Marine Park, British Columbia, by Anne McKinnell
Not all clouds are created equal though. They come in many shapes, sizes, densities, and altitudes, and they all refract or absorb the light in different ways that can drastically change the quality of your photographs.

Types of Clouds

Clouds that hang low in the sky and form a band on the horizon or appear like a thick blanket covering the sky will block the sun’s high-flying rays and make the sunset pretty anti-climactic, if you can see it at all.
Sometimes large and lumpy clouds that are brighter on the top and dark on the bottom can create a lot of contrast, making for a very moody atmosphere. Rain, snow, and hail clouds fall under this category, as the weight of the excess moisture weighs them down.
Storm Cloud by Anne McKinnell
The most radiant displays of colour emerge when the clouds are very high in the sky. They are usually smaller, whiter, and thinner than the low-lying clouds, and they are able to catch the sunlight from beneath, allowing us to view those fiery colours from the ground.
These are more likely to occur when the weather is hot and dry, which is why desert landscapes are famous for their magnificent sunsets. When you want to create a dazzling sunset photo, these are the clouds you want to look out for.
Mesquite Sand Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California, by Anne McKinnell

Predicting the Weather

Sunsets don’t last very long, so it takes a little planning and a lot of luck to have nature set up the perfect sky for you. You never know when the ideal conditions are going to present themselves, but if you tune your senses to the weather and its patterns, you will start to get an idea of when you can expect to see the right amount of clouds in a sunset sky.
Watch the sky over the course of the day to see what kinds of clouds are forming and how fast they’re drifting overhead. Check your local weather forecast to find out when the sun will go down, and try to judge if they’ll be sticking around based on the time of day and the speed of their movement. Keep informed about any storms coming in that will bring low-hanging clouds along with them.
If you have a great view from your back yard, all you have to do is keep your camera at hand so you can dart out when you see a great sky. On the other hand, if your aim is to travel to a more distant location to get your shot, you’ll have to be a little more precise in your calculations to avoid hauling all your gear up a mountain only to have the clouds dissipate. Your best bet is to choose a location that will be beautiful with or without clouds – that way, if nature doesn’t cooperate, you haven’t wasted the trip.
Rio Grande, Big Bend National Park, Texas, by Anne McKinnell

The Perfect Exposure

The most effective way of bringing out the natural saturation of coloured light is to underexpose very slightly – between a half-stop and a full stop. This darkens the rest of the image, making the colour pop in comparison. Use your exposure compensation to adjust this.
To make sure you get the best possible exposure, bracket your shots. This means taking several images at different exposures, so you can analyze them on your computer at home in order to determine which is the most successful. This can be done manually using your exposure compensation setting – take one image using the camera’s default settings, then take one that is underexposed by half a stop and one that is overexposed by half a stop. Some cameras will have an automatic bracketing option that you can utilize to change these settings for you.
Another option is to create a high-dynamic range (HDR) image by combining multiple exposures as I did in this photo of a Joshua Tree. I made one exposure for the sky, another for the mid-tones, and another for the shadows and combined them in post-processing.
Joshua Tree National Park, California, by Anne McKinnell
If you want to soften the appearance of moving clouds, use a long shutter speed to blur them slightly. If they are drifting slowly you’ll need a longer exposure to achieve this than if they’re gliding swiftly across the sky.

Foreground

When you’re going after sunset-specific shots, there’s a good chance that your foreground is going to be silhouetted against the sky. When this happens, it’s easy to forget about the foreground all together. This is a mistake. Remember that every part of your frame is important. The darkened foreground is simply negative space, and should be composed just like the rest of the image. Look for interesting shapes or objects to place in the frame to create a focal point that enhances the picture. If you want your foreground to be more visible, use fill flash (flash with the brightness turned down) to lighten the subject slightly without overexposing.
Fort Stockton, Texas, by Anne McKinnell

Post-Processing

When you bring your photos into an image editing program, you might have the urge to crank up the saturation and make the colours really bold. Resist the urge to go overboard on this feature; a 5% increase is all right, but much more than that can cause your image to take on a cartoonish look that could make it appear inauthentic. If your software allows you to, change the “vibrance” instead. This option is similar to saturation, but it focuses its effects on the pixels with lower colour intensity, preventing over saturation. Be ginger with your adjustments, and when in doubt dial them back a little bit to ensure the alterations are subtle and the final image looks natural.

Top Reasons Why You Should Consider Adding Cool Effects To Photos

There are quite a few people out there who think that adding effects to photos is wrong. These are the people who typically have a very traditionalist approach to photography. What they don't know that even the most professional and highly regarded photographers these days encourage the addition of cool photo effects to enhance the overall look and feel of photographs. The one thing that you need to bear in mind about adding effects to your photographs is that it should be done in such a manner that it must not change the image. What this means is that you can just remove or add certain elements, or just highlight one that is already there so that you can attain a shot that is literally perfect in all its different senses. Apart from that, given below are a few major reasons as to why you should consider adding photo effects:

Got errors on your photo? Hide them away with cool photo effects!

You heard that right! If there are any errors whatsoever over the image that you just shot, you can easily hide it by adding effects to photos. This way, there wouldn't be any need whatsoever for you to discard a photograph for the simple reason that it has a minor error over it. No matter how good or bad an image you have acquired, you can actually make it look a hundred percent better by adding effects to it. Cheating the human eye isn't all that hard these days and that is just what you will be doing when you add effects to photos. Any part of the shot that you think needs improvements can easily be enhanced this way. Thanks to effects, there is no reason at all as to why you should have an imperfect image at hand!

It helps in the enhancement of your photos

Every single photographer out there obviously wishes to attain perfection in the photographs that he or she snaps. To them, any image that hasn't achieved perfection is a waste. For this reason, even the top photographers these days make changes in their photos to make them perfect with the help of cool photo effects. There are endless effects that you can use to enhance the overall appearance of your photo shots, so make sure that you look into them from now onwards to get that wow factor in your images.

Highlight the subject of your photographs through photo effects

You can actually add effects to photos in order to highlight the subject of your shots. Your subject is obviously the focus of your photograph so you can highlight it all the more with the addition of photo effects. The best part about this is that by doing so, you really wouldn't change or ruin the subject of your photograph, but would just enhance it more so that it receives the best attention.
If truth be told, there are endless reasons why you should add photo effects, but to sum them all up, it is best for you to use effects in your photos to give them a more 'perfect' look and feel.

Close-Up Photography Tips - Macro Extension Tubes For Photographers On A Budget

If you are a macro photographer with a low budget, there are many cost-effective alternatives you can opt for. One of these alternatives is to use macro extension tubes.

These photographers gadgets come with different camera mount fittings. This enables the them to fit nicely between the cameras and lens so that the distance between both lenses and sensor are increased.

Macro Extension Tubes Tip #1 - Image Quality

When this happens, the minimum focusing distance is reduced so that you can focus closer. Unlike using close-up filters, the quality of the images taken with a macro extension tube will not be affected because these photography gadgets are hollow as they do not contain any optical elements.

Macro Extension Tubes Tip #2 - Greater Magnification Vs. Amount of Light Lost

Nonetheless, when you use this photography gadget, it will affect the amount of light that enters the camera. Bear this in mind; more light will be lost when the magnification is greater. Your DSLR's through the lens (TTL) metering system will automatically counteract this issue. Still, it will be best for you to not forget that the shutter speed will be a little longer when you use one.

Macro Extension Tubes Tip #3 - The Wider It Is, The Higher The Magnification

The thing I love about this photography gadget is that they are compact, light, and can produce stunning results. They are sold in sets of three lengths, but they can also be bought separately. The common lengths are 36mm, 25mm, and 12mm.

You have to note that the wider it is, the higher the magnification. The magnification may be equal to or perhaps, greater than the life-size (1:1) capabilities of macro lenses.

Macro Extension Tubes Tip #4 - Do Not Use Too Many

Nevertheless, when you use a lot of it, the distance between your camera and your subject will appear looking very short. This situation would still be alright if your subject is one that is static. However, it may be inappropriate for photographers attempting to conduct wildlife photography.

Macro Extension Tubes Tip #5 - Highly Recommended

It is highly recommended for photographers to purchase Auto Extension Tubes. They are great choices because they include electronics that will maintain your camera's metering and focusing.

Although they are more expensive than basic tubes, they are still way cheaper as compared to macro lenses.

Stuck for Inspiration? Don't Forget Your Roots - Here Are 5 Key Ideas for Photographers

There is a famous quote that alludes to the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, while agreeing with this quote, it is essential to state that a well taken photograph is worth much more than a thousand words. Indeed, an excellent photo has the ability to not only express beauty, but also store the fondest of memories. Photography is an art which requires skill and technique.

To help you gain the necessary skills, here is an article outlining 5 basic ideas for photographers.

#1 Acquire the best camera

It is quite hard to talk about ideas for photographers without mentioning the camera; for it is the device through which photos are taken. Cameras come in various sizes, shapes, color and most importantly resolution powers. There is no doubt that technology has revolutionized the photography industry because it has spearheaded the manufacture and production of high resolution cameras which have the ability to shoot crisp-clear photographs. Therefore, the first and most essential idea to great photography is to ensure that you are equipped with a powerful camera.

#2 Detail

Taking a great picture is about capturing that particular detail which will make the difference. Every photo should be taken with absolute creativity to ensure that all the details are captured. Even when there appears to be no outstanding detail, try to look closely and you will certainly find one. Just like drawing a picture to represent a thousand words, creativity goes a long way in delivering a memorable photo.

#3 Light

Cameras directly depend on sufficient lighting to produce excellent shots. While this is not to say that photos cannot be taken during the night or in dark places, it is important to confirm that light is an integral element of photography.

If you intend to take photos in locations where natural lighting is alien or limited, you have to use an artificial lighting source such as electricity to increase your chances of taking a beautiful picture.

Although technology has brought us powerful cameras which are capable of independently taking photos in dark locations, you have to keep in mind that the trick here is to shoot great pictures with these 5 great ideas for photographers.

#4 Background

Almost always, a great photo has an amazing background. Here, two aspects of photography come into play; instant and selective. There are times when you have to take photos without having the option to change locations or backgrounds for that matter.
A case in point is when you are taking photos of people attending a certain ceremony. You are required to make use of your creativity and alertness to produce high quality picture, but when you have the freedom to choose from various backgrounds, be sure to go with smoky or watery backgrounds as they bring the best out of a photo.

#5 Photo framing

Of these 5 ideas for photographers, photo framing is definitely the easiest to implement. This is largely because framing the photo adds a touch of creativity and design to it. Different photos require different frames for them to be great. You need to exploit the use of various frames to determine the most suited to fit on a particular photo.

In conclusion, there are numerous tips, but the outlined 5 great photography photo ideas will give you a perfect start to taking awesome pictures! Once you master these basics you can start looking towards more advanced techniques like trick photography and special effects.

Advantages Of Using Photo Booths In Parties

Many years before photo booths came into use, it was common to ask professional photographers to take photos during events. Professional photographers had to grapple with too many shortcomings, especially if the event had too many guests. The only solution available then was to use two or more photographers, though it did not solve all the problems. Some problems still persisted in spite of photographers using digital cameras.

Digital camera does speed up producing prints, but it is not fast enough to give your guests an instant print out. They need to be processed a bit, though not like in film-based cameras. Typically, images captured in digital cameras are transferred to a computer, and after a makeover (minor) they are printed on photographic papers. Therefore, a time lag between the time of taking a snap and delivery is unavoidable.

Though this is seemingly simple, and the only casualty appears to be time, hosts ended up spending substantially on mailing expenses. Yet another casualty was the time hosts lost in sorting out printouts. The time wasted was really mind boggling. In a fast paced world where we live these days, it would be unimaginable doing all this manually (neither can machines do it). The arrival of photo booth rentals has changed the ways in which we make photographs at parties and weddings, and even at corporate meetings and celebrations.

The advantages of photo booths are that, you don't need a photographer and your guests get printouts instantly. As a host, you save money and time. You don't have to own a photo booth to take advantage of its features. In fact consumers don't own photo at all, because, they are heavy, difficult to store and require an expert attendant; all of which is usually in short supply. It is therefore prudent to contact Photo Booth Rentals Company in your location.

Photo booths come in many different sizes and configurations. Some types are particularly useful for weddings, some for parties and still some that are especially made for use in home situations; like for example a birthday celebration. Size matters a lot, if you are going to use it indoors. You will have to check whether your home's door is big enough to bring in a Photographer and whether it can be accommodated in the elevator if you live in a condominium.

There are two types of photo booths that you can order on rental - open type or closed type. Open types are best suited for parties and open-air celebrations - in a garden for example. They can accommodate large groups (8 or more people). It is common for users to order packaged rental. The benefits of packaged rental are - you save money, the rental company provides an attendant, they take care of expenses related to transporting and installing, and you know beforehand the total expense.

The other things to look in packaged rental are - wedding session time, number of strips included in the rental, cost of additional strips, cost of special backdrops, and cost of Halloween. Never get carried away by offers that are impossible for the rental companies to give. Get a quote before you order a photo booth

Photography Tips for Low Light Conditions

Much more than random clicks and going around with your camera hanging around your neck, photography is an art. Perhaps, one of the toughest forms of art, photography, to a great extent is dependent on external components like light and shade to be perfect.

With new technologically advanced cameras making rounds in the market, photography has become as easy as a click of the shutter. However, photographers who are passionate and take this art form seriously need to know the magic of light and shadow. Because, cameras work in the light, it's always been a challenge to take good photos during the night-time.

Night time offers brilliant photographic moments. The sky, the stars, planets and the nature come together as a delightful photographic moment. However, the poor light conditions make the photographs look grainy and odd colored. With advanced hardware for cameras, it has become quite easy for the photographers to click quality photos even in the dark!

Here are some photography tips to help you shoot in the dark.

ISO: When shooting in low light or dark conditions, using a higher ISO somewhere around 800 to 6400 is a good idea.
Use larger lenses: Large aperture lenses work quite well in dark conditions. Large lenses with 35mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.8 features can be very effective in low light conditions. However, one has to remember, while using these lenses the ISO level needs to be low. Somewhere around 400-1600 is sufficient. This also keeps the focus on the subject hence, blurring the background and surroundings. This creates an amazing effect for photos.

Successive Drive: Taking photographs is a row in the dark can get you that one perfect photo you've been waiting for. You have to enable the drive mode available in the menu.
Use Tripod: Ideal for outdoor and indoor shoots that involves stationary subjects, tripods are the perfect aperture to shoot at night. This helps you to avoid blurry photos. Try and avoid using it for moving subjects.

Use Flash: Needless of saying, without flash, you cannot shoot at night or low light conditions. Flash is a must for night-time photographs. Flash illuminates the subject of photograph and makes the photo bright. For outdoor shoots, use external flash. While shooting indoors, focus the flash to the ceiling to reflect the light on the subject therefore, illuminating it with a soft light.

Grab the moment: There is no point in hurrying when it comes to photography. Wait for the right moment to get the best click. It's advised to let the subject settle down for sometime before you shoot it. This ensures you have the best quality click.

Source of Light: Even during the night-time or in low light conditions, it's important the subject faces the major source of light. The light needs to fall on the subject evenly. You can also use reflectors to reflect the light on the subject's face.

Aperture Priority mode: For low light conditions, use the smaller aperture value like f/3.5 or smaller. This helps the lens to open up more thus, making the photo brighter.

Birthday Photography Tips

When you are young, one of the most special days of the year is your birthday. Whether it’s a home party or a special day out, being creative and flexible is the best way to catch memorable birthday images. Children can be temperamental at the best of times, so always be ready to capture the smiles when they occur.
1

My, How You Have Grown!

Photograph of a child with the birthday cake
Children grow fast; one day they cannot walk or talk, then it seems like the next day they can run and have conversations with you. Track each birthday and remember to catch details such as the candles on the cake, balloons and presents. Photograph your child sitting next to the cake. Use natural light by a window for the best effect, and a large aperture (f/2.8-f/4) to blur out the background. Choose a shutter speed of 1/100th of a second and upwards to avoid blur and for multiple shots use continuous shooting mode. This is important as children move around quickly. Use an external flash (with a diffuser) to fill in any dark spots.
2

Capture Expressions

Three young girls outdoors merry, celebrate a birthday, give gifts
Children are full of energy and joy, especially on their birthday. Keep an eye on them and take photos while they are playing with their friends. A zoom lens of 24-70mm is ideal for this kind of indoor image. Turn the mode dial to AV (Aperture Priority) mode, select an ISO of 100-800 and a wide aperture of f/2.8-f/10 for a blurred background. Use flash to freeze the action. Consider using a separate flash, which is more powerful than the built in flash. This is important especially if you are photographing the children from a few yards away.
3

Get in Close

Birthday girl blowing birthday candles
The best time for a close-up photograph is when the children are sitting down opening presents or blowing out the candles on their cake. Take a few photos from the side and focus on the child’s face. Use a shallow depth of field to keep the background out of focus. You want to keep the shutter speed at 1/160th of a second to keep everything sharp, but also capture some of the smoke trails coming from the candles. Use a higher ISO setting if you are indoors as there is less light.
4

Cherish Memories

Portrait of happy boys on birthday party blowing at candles on cake
Don’t just focus on the birthday boy or girl; makes sure you take pictures of the other children too. Watch how children interact with each other, and include siblings as well. Capture moments of them having fun with each other. If you are in your home the light may be fairly low; you’ll you need to push the ISO up to 400 and open the aperture to f/2.8-f/4 to let light in. Find interesting ways to frame the images; height differences between children are interesting for composition. Remember to include elements of the party in the photo like balloons, decorations, and gifts.
5

Surprise! Surprise!

Birthday Girl eating a cupcake
Candid shots are some of the best images you can take at a birthday party. Certainly, people expect the obvious shots of the birthday child with the cake. You should try to capture a shot of each child at the party as well. Use a telephoto zoom lens to focus in on the children inconspicuously – set the aperture to f/4 to blur out distractions, and use a reasonable shutter speed of 1/125th of a second to keep things sharp. Remember if you are indoors use an ISO of 400 or higher so you have sufficiently fast shutter speeds. Use the spot metering mode and meter on the child's face.
S

Recommended Settings

When photographing birthday parties, most of the time you will be indoors, so make sure your ISO setting is at least 400-800. Try not to go higher as the images may get too grainy. Be sure to use shutter speeds of at least 1/125th of a second to keep the images sharp, as children move around quickly and unexpectedly. Flash can be used to illuminate the child’s face, but be wary of over-use. Some flash images can look harsh and unnatural, or overexposed.
E

Recommended Equipment

A variety of lenses are useful for birthday photographs. Telephoto lenses of 300mm help to keep you in the background so you can get candid shots. A standard 50mm lens is very versatile and can give clear shots with a similar perspective to the human eye. In addition, you can usually get good close-ups with a 50mm lens.
C

Conclusion

Photographing a child’s birthday is a great way to remember the child at that point in time. It is amazing how much people change as they grow, and you want to be able to look back years later. When working with young people it helps to be quick on your feet, quick at focusing and able to shoot the images without over thinking them. The approach is to let the child be free, and work with what they do. Letting the child feel comfortable is the first step in getting great birthday photographs.

10 Quick and Easy Tips to improve your Photography

It’s a new week and I’ve got a new set of tips to improve your photography. This week’s tips focus on planning and decision making while taking your shots…. Eventually it will feel like second nature and you won’t even be aware of the process, until then… keep these tips in mind.
improve-photography-tips-000.jpg

1. Daydream

Yes, that’s right keep dreaming about your shot. Pre-Visualize in your mind what it will look like and walk through the steps you need to take to get it. This is a shot I thought about for several weeks before finally setting it up and taking it. With only one camera, I often feel like I’m constantly juggling lenses!
improve-photography-tips-111.jpg

2. Use wide lens

Try to use wide lenses for landscape shots when you want to create an impact of size. You can use a wide range of lenses to shoot landscapes but the vistas are amazing if you shoot with the widest lens possible because they give you a bigger angle of view.
improve-photography-tips-2222.jpg

3. Sharpen Your Subjects

Keep your main subjects sharp. Sharp details in the image truly draw the viewers’ eyes towards the subject. Use your tripod in low light conditions to make sharp pictures. Try to make use of the new sharpening effect in Adobe Camera RAW. It does a great job and has improved from previous versions.
improve-photography-tips-3333.jpg

4. Keep it Clean

A background makes or breaks your shot so be sure to think carefully about the how you place your subject. Keep the background clean, simple and clutter free. Think about where the viewer should be focused….
improve-photography-tips-4444.jpg

5. You Can’t Have Too Many Clouds

Use fluffy white clouds on a blue sky to produce dramatic skies. Is it overcast with too many clouds to see the sky? The sky is now a giant soft box. This is the time to shoot portraits or waterfalls and streams with a motion blur effect.
improve-photography-tips-555.jpg

6. Behind Every Great Shot is the Sun

Stand with the sun at your back and the light of the sun falling on your subject. Unless you are making artistic pictures always try to keep the sun behind you.
improve-photography-tips-6666.jpg

7. Light Trails

Enhance your dawn and night urban shots with light trails. Use vehicles or any other moving lights to add interest, mood, and drama. Light trails almost always makes the shot interesting (learn: how to shoot light trails).
improve-photography-tips-7777.jpg

8. Silhouettes

The key is an uncluttered, lit background. Simply place your subject in the foreground so that you have clean, sharp lines and go for it. Play with placement and angles to make awesome silhouettes (learn: how to shoot Silhouettes).
improve-photography-tips-8888.jpg

9. Top to Bottom

Look straight up. Look straight down. Now examine everything in between. There are great shots from every vantage point, including an unexpected angle. Sometimes we focus so much on the obvious shot that we miss something special just a heartbeat away.
improve-photography-tips-9999.jpg

10. And finally… It’s a Camera not a Machine Gun

Unless you are taking action shots or a time lapse series, try to reduce the number of shots. Don’t just fire away hoping for something good to appear during editing. Think, move, and adjust your framing before you click the shutter. You’ll develop better instincts and save hours of time editing those hundreds of extra images.

How to Get the Best Family Portraits

Taking family portraits has never been the easiest thing to do. Just getting everyone together for that one perfect picture can be a daunting task. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to have a portrait that you and your family can look back on and admire for many years to come.

The first thing you need to do in order to get the best family portraits is get a professional photographer. There is really nothing wrong with using your own camera and using the self timer. However, for that one perfect photo, it is always advisable that you involve the professionals. When choosing a professional family photographer, you need to pick one who has specialized in this area. Always insist on looking over some of the previous portraits they have done for other clients. This allows you to find out the kind of professionalism to expect from the photographer. Once you have the right family photographer, then almost all your problems are solved.

The photographer will offer you advice on what you need to do in preparation for the photo session. You should book the family photographer long in advance. This is because the best photographers are normally in high demand. Therefore, when you are sure you have a date where the whole family can come together, book a photo session. It is also essential that all the members of the family are aware of the date so that they can prepare adequately.

There are two options you can choose from for family portraits. The first option is going for a studio shoot. How to Take Awesome Photos in Bright Sunlight!

Capturing photographs in bright sunlight can leave even the most experienced photographer running for cover. Powerful bright light can be very unflattering when taking portraits, it can leave your model with 'panda like,' black areas, under their eyes. However counter intuitive it may seem these black areas can be lightened by using your on camera flash. But balancing flash with bright daylight can take a little practice to get the exposure right.

Get into Position

Conventional photographic wisdom states that you (the photographer) should capture portraits with the sun behind you, so that the subjects face is lit by the sun. In my experience this can leave your model with broken retinas and a squinty looking face! An alternative is to stand your subject in an area of shade or to create some diffuse light by putting a diffuser (the white mesh part of your reflector) between the subject and the sun. This will hopefully mean that your model is bathed in a soft light for a flattering portrait.

Go with the Flow

Instead of fighting the sun (sometimes it good to know when you are beat!) it's a good idea to try and harness the full power of it. The sun is a very effective rim lighter. Rim lighting is produced when the subject is placed between the camera and the sun. The sun can then produce a rather pleasant halo of light around the subject. This can be an interesting abstract portrait technique. If you want to reveal more of the subject than a dark silhouette you will need to experiment with the exposure compensation button.

Lens Flare

Lens producers spend a lot of time and money developing glass that doesn't produce lens flare. But I think lens flare can add an interesting visual disturbance and be something that photographers should perhaps embrace. To increase the chances of getting lens flare you definitely need to get rid of the plastic cuff from the end of your camera - this is specifically designed to help cut out lens flare. You also need to try and shoot into the sun (use your camera in 'Live Mode' you can damage your eyes if you look in the view finder and stare at the sun). Experiment with different camera angles to see which produces the most lens flare.
So don't leave your camera in the shade next time the sun is out - instead use these experimental photography techniques to harness the suns energy.
